The Báb (The Gate) is the Forerunner who declared his mission in 1844
in Persia (Iran). Bahá'u'lláh (The Glory of God) is the founder
and "declared His station" in 1863.
[1]
Founded: 1844
The heart of ethical teachings: The Hidden Worlds. Principal exposition of doctrinal message: The Book of Certitude. Mystical writings: The Seven Valleys. Foremost writings: The Most Holy Book which is the Mother Book of the Bah'i dispensation, the chief repository of the laws and institutions which Bah'u'llh designed for the World Order He conceived. [2] All these and more were written by Bah'u'llh who wrote over 100 volumes. The Bb wrote a book titled the Bayn in which he abrogated certain Muslim laws and replaced them with new ones. [3] 'Abdu'l-Bah also wrote extensively. Shoghi Effendi translated many of the writings of Baha'u'llah and 'Abdu'l-Bah into English.
God has sent us Messengers whose Messages were according to our understanding in the time during which we livedBah's believe that the Messenger of God for this moment in time is Bah'u'llh. [4]
Bah'u'llh, the One who founded the Faithclaims to fulfill the prophecies concerning the Promised One of all religions. His life and teachings are worthy of further study to determine the goodness of His fruit, and the validity of His claim. [5]
Bah'u'llh is the Messenger of God for this age and the Promised One of all religions. [6]
Bah'u'llh laid entirely new spiritual foundations. His writings are independent scripture, and His work transcends that of a religious reformer. [7]
Of particular sacred significance to Bah'is are calligraphic forms of the word Bah (Arabic for Glory), known as the Greatest Name, a reference to Bah'u'llh. [8]
For Bah'is of Jewish background, Bah'u'llh is the appearance of the promised Lord of Hosts come down with ten thousands of saints. A descendent of Abraham and a scion from the root of Jesse. [9]
The nine Bah'i Manifestations of God are Abraham, Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ, Mohammed, The Bb and Bah'u'llh.
Bah'is do not proselytize, they believe that everybody should discover Bah'u'llh for themself. [10]
The actual process of becoming part of the Bah'i communityoften involves a written or spoken declaration that you believe in Bah'u'llh as the Messenger of God for this day and agree to try to obey His laws and institutions.there is a Bah'i Administration which Bah'is must obey. [11]
'Abdu'l-Bah means Servant of Baha 'Abdu'l-Bah is the eldest son of Bah'u'llh and was appointed by Him as the Interpreter of His teachings and the Centre of His Covenant. 'Abdu'l-Bah appointed Shoghi Effendi as the Guardian of the Bah'i Faith and the only interpreter of Bah'u'llh teachings after Himself. [12]
The human species has always been distinct, though it may have gone through evolutionary stages resembling animals. [13]
Bah'u'llh is the last prophet thus far however, he will not be the last. The next great prophet or manifestation of God is not expected until 1,000 years have passed from the time of Bah'u'llh. [14]
Allah or Yahweh, God or Brahmawe are speaking about the same unique Being. [15]
Whether you are a Christian, Moslem, Hindu, Buddhist, Jew or even agnostic, most would agree that there is only one God. Therefore, each of us prays to the same source. It is towards this one God, whatever name you may give Him, that these prayers are directed. [16]
Bah's believe that there is only one God, the Creator of the universe. Throughout history, God has revealed Himself to humanity through a series of divine Messengers, each of Whom has founded a great religion. [17]
We are not God, nor are we gods, nor are we Manifestations of God. [18]
He who is in the condition of servitude [to God], however far he may progress in gaining limitless perfections, will never reach the condition of Deity. [19]
The revelation of Jesus was for His own dispensation, that of the Son, and now is no longer the point of guidance to the world. Bah'is must be severed from all and everything that is pastthings both good and badeverythingnow all is changed. All the teachings of the past are past. 'Abdu'l-Bah is now supplying all the world. [20]
There are two kinds of Prophets or TeachersPrimary Messengers, like Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha and Bah'u'llh, and secondary messengers, like Isaiah and St. JohnThe Primary Messengers, (what Bahais call Manifestations of God)All manifestations are equal in knowledge and spiritand build upon each others contributions. [21]
Jesus is considered a Manifestation of God, Manifestation of God are perfect reflections of God, they are not God in His essence. [22]
For Bah'is of Christian background, Bah'u'llh fulfills the paradoxical promises of Christs return in the Glory of the Father and as a thief in the night. [23]
'Abdu'l-Bah [eldest son of Bah'u'llh] was given the title The Perfect Exemplar as He lived a life more perfect than any other man. [24]
God, His Messengers, and the Holy Spirit are what Christians call the Father, the Christ & The Holy Ghost. These three can be likened to the sun, a perfect mirror, and the light that reflects off the mirror to create a perfect image of the Sun. While the sun never leaves the sky, the mirror (Messenger) can still be said to represent the sun (God) on earth through the power of its light (Holy Spirit). [25]
Gods Messengers have not come to save us because we are inherently evil, but rather to educate us because we are inherently ignorant and in need of guidance. [26]
Bah'u'llh repeatedly stressed that only revealed religion can save us from our imperfectionsThis is the salvation that religion brings. It does not save us from the stain of some original sin, nor does it protect us from some external evil force or devilsalvation in any age, Bah's believe, is to turn again towards God, to accept his Manifestation for that day, and to follow his teachings. [27]
Heaven is simply moving towards GodIf you love truth, justice and kindness, then you will move towards God, no matter what you call yourself. [28]
There is not locked door between heaven and hell.Hell is moving away [from God]. [29]
Bah'u'llh explained that references to Satan in the Scriptures of earlier religions are symbolic and should not be taken literallyThere is, in fact, a well-known philosophical problem concerning Gods goodness and omnipotence and the possible existence of a Satan. [30]
Jesus was born of a virgin and was the spiritual Son, not the physical Son of God. Gods spiritual Son rose spiritually to a spiritual Heaven to live forever. The term return refers to a return of the spiritual qualities or spiritual station of a prophet, not their physical return. [31]
O SON OF SPIRIT! Noble have I created thee, yet thou hast abased thyself. Rise then unto that for which thou wast created. [32]
with the human soul, there is no decline. Its only movement is toward perfection; growth and progress alone constitute the motion of the soulThe world of mortality is a world of contradictions, of opposites; motion being compulsory everything must either go forward or retreat. In the realm of spirit there is no retreat possible, all movement is bound to be towards a perfect state. [33]
In creation there is no evil, all is good. Certain qualities and natures innate in some men and apparently blameworthy are not so in realityThe Bah' Faith does not therefore accept the concept of original sin or any related doctrine which considers that people are basically evil or have intrinsically evil elements in their nature.Bah' teachings deny the existence of Satan, a devil, or an evil force. Evil, it is explained, is the absence of goodHowever, if a personfails to make the necessary effort to develop his spiritual capacities, the result is imperfection [referred to as] dark spots.'Abdu'l-Bah has said that evil is imperfection. [34]
Sin is the absence of good. [35]
The foundation of all religion is one. [36]
Bah'u'llh wrote, Their unity is absolute. God, the Creator, saith: There is no distinction whatsoever among the Bearers of My MessageThis process of revelation has been recorded in the worlds great holy booksbooks that range from the Torah to the Qur'n, and which include Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and Zoroastrian scriptures. These writings represent humanitys record of Gods Word. [37]
The people of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly Source. [38]
For Bah'is, the books, tablets and letters penned by Baha'u'llah represent today the Word of God renewed. Although they are consistent with past religious revelations, and represent the changeless Faith of God, eternal in the past, eternal in the future, the writings of Bah'u'llh also contain fresh truths about Gods will for humanity today. [39]
The soul continues after death. [40]
The soul lives on after the body's death, embarking on a spiritual journey towards God through many worlds or planes of existence. Progress on this journey, in traditional terms, is likened to heaven. If the soul fails to develop, one remains distant from God. This condition of remoteness from God can in some sense be understood as hell. Thus, heaven and hell are regarded not as literal places but descriptions of ones spiritual progress toward the light of God. [41]
The nature of the soul after death can never be described." [42]
The soul is immortal. If it is attracted to the attributes of God, it will be strengthened and continue to move towards God after death. If not, it will weaken and fadeFor the spiritually strong person, death is the door to true lifewe will not return to the physical world. [43]
Bah'is pray for the dead because the dead who failed to live virtuous lives may have ended up in a worlds or planes of existence which is not necessarily a higher plane of existence. [44]
Humanity goes through stages of development similar to those of an individual. We are currently moving from adolescence to maturityThe transition into the global equivalent of maturity will involve a certain level of chaos and difficulty, but will also release a wonderful potentialWorld Peace is not only possible, but is the only reasonable expectation for a mature human race. A World Parliament is needed to organize and maintain global peace and cooperationThe world needs an international auxiliary language to allow better communicate and greater cooperation and trust between peoples. This will promote world peace. [45]
Among the principles emphasized by Bah'u'llh area world commonwealth of nations. [46]
This succession of divine Teachers reflect a single historic plan of GodThe goal has been to prepare that way for a single, global and ever-advancing civilization." [47]
As the new millennium approaches, the crucial need facing the human race is to find a unifying vision of the nature of man and society. Such a vision unfolds in the writings of Bah'u'llh. [48]
Religious, racial, gender, unity and equality:
The Bah'i Faith teaches... The Oneness of God-There is only one God. The Oneness of Religion-There is only one religion, progressively Revealed by God. The Oneness of Humanity-All people are equal in the sight of God." [49]
In the middle of the last century, one of the most notorious dungeons in the Near East was Teherans Black Pit.In this grim setting, the rarest and most cherished of religious events was once again played out: mortal man, outwardly human in other respects, was summoned by God to bring to humanity a new religious revelation. The year was 1852 Bah'u'llh received a vision of Gods will for humanity Bah'u'llhs experience in the Black Pit set in motion a process of religious revelation which, over the next 40 years, led to the production of thousands of books, tablets and letters which today form the core of the sacred scriptures of the Bah'i Faith. [50]
Unlike the teachings of Christ, for example, which were written down decades after they were uttered, the words of Bah'u'llh were recorded and authenticated at the time they were revealedall letters which arrived for Bah'u'llh were received by Mirza Aqa Jan [Bah'u'llhs personal secretary]. He would bring these into the presence of Bah'u'llh [who would] direct him to take up his pen and record the Tablet which was revealed in replySuch was the speed with which he used to write the revealed Word thatIt seemed as if someone had dipped a lock of hair in the ink and applied it over the whole pageAfter each period of Revelation, the original manuscript would be re-transcribed, with Bah'u'llh Himself overseeing and approving the final version.
